Internal vs Inline vs Remote Blowers: Which Range Hood Blower Is Right for You?

Internal Blower

A local blower means the blower is installed right here inside the hood. The first is an internal blower. An internal blower goes right up in that hood and takes care of it right there. It’s the easiest to install, it’s the cheapest, but obviously that’s going to be the loudest because it’s right there in the hood, and it’s being magnified by the steel if you have a canopy.

This is very quiet and located inside the hood, but in some applications customers want it even quieter.

Inline Blower

The inline blower is different from the regular blower that comes with your hood. The inline blower is installed in line with your ductwork, reducing the noise in your kitchen. The power cable that comes with this blower is four feet long. 

If you need a longer cable, consult your electrician to ensure it meets your local building code.

We have two different local inline blowers, and the only difference between them is the CFM and size. We currently carry a 900 CFM blower and an 1100 CFM blower. The 1100 CFM blower has a 12-inch diameter, and the 900 CFM blower has a 10-inch diameter.

The hood itself plugs into a wall outlet as normal. When you do this, the outlets inside the hood become live. The inline blower now comes with a pre-connected power cable, this plugs into the farthest outlet on the left side of the hood.

The second type of blower is a remote blower, those can be located either inline with your ductwork or somewhere between the blower and the rooftop vent.

The second kind is an inline blower. An inline blower is one that’s in the ductwork, usually in the attic, maybe in a crawl space, somewhere out of the way, and it powers it from up there. Same amount of suction, but you don’t hear it because it’s not in that hood. So you lose about 75% of the noise.

Remote Blower

It is located on the outside of the home, on the roof. The third one, and the most expensive, and by far the quietest, is an external one. You can get an external blower; it’s just housed in a little casing. You can put it on the roof, maybe find somewhere rich people have places they can put things. It’s not going to be easy, but that will let them hear hardly anything other than the fact that the fan is on.

One of the best and most unique features of our range hood and blower package is that you can take the local blower, that’s this motor, and you can make it into a remote blower by putting it inside a blower box. 

The benefits are cost savings from the local blower package, plus reduced noise by locating the blower away from the range hood. The controls are still the same, still controlled from the same controls that you use with the local blower controls. 

So we save you money because you don’t have to buy a second motor and you don’t have to have a separate set of controls to control that motor.

Comparing CFM

The first thing you’re going to consider is how powerful a blower you need in your range hood. That’s designated by the term CFM, cubic feet per minute, that’s the amount of air in one minute that the blower can move. There are some manufacturers out there that will use cubic meters per hour, that number will generally be bigger, so you need to make sure that you’re comparing apples to apples when comparing CFM.

Range hoods are rated by the amount of air they move in cubic feet per minute, or CFM. The higher the CFM, the faster the air can move.

This is an example of our 1600 CFM blower motor, it has a dual arbor configuration, dual centrifugal motors, 1600 CFM, and it’s completely variable speed. This is very quiet when located inside the hood, but in some applications, customers would like it to be even quieter, so that’s when you locate it away from the range hood, that’s when you put it in a remote configuration.
